Oh God…It’s almost summer!

I am a regular guy with a regular job, a house in the suburbs, a wife and two kids (no dogs yet).
It was last Friday evening, I had a long day at work and by the time I got home, the kids and wife had already had their supper. My wife warmed up some meatloaf and mashed potatoes and sat with me at the dinner table. As I was enjoying my meatloaf, she started the conversation… “ I think we are almost 98% done in the dining room”. I looked up from my plate with a puzzled look. My wife can read me well, she started explaining, the lights in the dining room are not sufficientthe light fixture istoo small for the dining table, we should either change to potlights or replace it with a larger chandelier”. “Another project for me”, I wondered. As I said before she reads me well, sheanswered the question that I didn’t even ask. It’s not a project for you; we will need an electrician to do this. Then she went on for another five minutes explaining how the light is the most important thing in creating the right ambience in the roomyadda yadda yaddaI kept nodding every few minutes insuch a way that it couldn’t be interpreted as an agreement or a disagreement.

As I slowly finished my dinner, I had to ask  Are you sure?”.“What do you mean, Am I sure? How many times have I askedyou to do anything in the house. All I wish is just once…once in my life you would agree with me and not make a fuss about spending money on our house…just once….”. She kept going on and on…and it didn’t stop here….her big black beautiful eyes welled up with tears and they slowly started rolling down her cheeks. “ Oh man!!”

I wondered. My mind was running at the speed of light and I had to have a response and a good response. Finally, I said “Honey, it’s not about the money, we had set aside two grand to spend on the house this summer. Think about it… All I am saying is, are you sure, you want to spend this money on the dining room? What about the laundry room project? We have to do shelving there, don’t we? What about the backyard project? There is water pooling at the fenceall year around and we have been postponing it a for long time, haven’t we? What about the patio floor? We have to paint it, don’t we? We have all these pending projects and all I wanted to do is make sure that we spend the money on the most important one. I proudly smiled on my quick comeback, as I picked up my plate and dropped it in the sink. What I didn’t know is that my wife had thought it through, better than I had. Oh.ok”,she said, “ We won’t have to spend that much money on the other projects, because the only cost for those projects will be the material, there is no labour cost because you will be doing all these projects by yourself. I can help of course …..”

I sat in there in silence and it was then that it hit me  Oh God…it’s almost summer”!

Why Referrals are Important to Service Businesses

If you are looking to bolster sales for your service business, nothing beats word-of-mouth marketing and referrals. This may seem like common sense to you, however, millions of service business owners in North America spend billions of dollars on advertising every year while neglecting the most effective means of advertising - online referrals.
According to research by Nielsen, 92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family more than all other forms of marketing. The same study found that less than half of all customers consider traditional paid advertising to be credible—that’s a decrease of more than 20 percent since 2009!
Here are some reasons why building an online brand and driving referrals is important:
  • 49% of U.S. consumers say friends and family are their top sources of brand awareness, up from 43% in 2009. (Jack Morton)
  • 85% of fans of brands on Facebook recommend brands to others. (Syncapse)
  • 43% of consumers are more likely to buy a new product or service when learning about it on social media. (Nielsen)
  • 77% of consumers are more likely to buy a new product when learning about it from friends or family. (Nielsen)
  • 81% of U.S. online consumers’ purchase decisions are influenced by their friends’ social media posts versus 78% who are influenced by the posts of the brands they follow on social media. (Market Force)
